West Midlands Christian Football League Cup - match report - 25th April 2007

A thrilling match took place on Wed when St. Mary's played Renewal Church,
Solihull. We were outnumbered on the terrace by about 10- 1, and I
hoped this would not reflect the final result!
We scored first after their goalkeeper fumbled and gave us an own goal.
Then Renewal scored a superb volley to make the score 1-1 at half time.
We started slowly in the second half, but slowly began to get on top.
A long free kick was finished off by John Bignell, but Renewal came back
and equalised soon afterwards. But we kept pressing and Nick Sprason
scored a fine goal (some think with his right foot, but this is usually
only for standing on) to restore our lead.

Andrew Beeson (Tink) replaced Josh Blunt, who had chased
everything up front and run himself into the ground.
Tink immediately caused problems in the defence with his pace and
skill and eventually their goalie handled outside the area and received
a red card (rather a hard decision given the spirit in which the match was played.)
But Renewal kept their heads and only  a superb save by our
goalie kept our lead intact.
Just before the final whistle, Tink had a superb solo run, finishing with
a shot which their replacement goalie could only deflect into the net.
So we ran out 4-2 winners. Well done to all the team.

Pidgeon carries St Mary's to victory
Veteran wicket keeper Alan Pidgeon rolled back the years to put in a Man of the Match display against St Peter's, Wolverhampton to ensure a thrilling victory for St Mary's in the latest
Lichfield Diocese Cricket League fixture.
Alan, a full 60 years senior to the opposing team's 'keeper, displayed superb wicket-keeping skills which brought 5  dismissals, as well as a gutsy innings of 13 n.o. that anchored the team's batting.
Assisted by good knocks from Phil Kinson,
David Ford & Matt Wallace,
St Mary's posted a score of 135 from their 25 overs, just
enough to pip St Peter's gutsy reply of 128.
