Mercy Air Helicopter provides aid and encouragement to Mozambique
The Matutuine district is the Southern most district of Mozambique and is
bordered by South Africa and Swaziland. It consists of vast open sandy plains,
dense forests with elephants and a large network of coastal lakes. The people
of this area live in small groups, often quite far from each other and
essential services. The few roads are sand tracks that make driving very slow
and tedious so that a journey to the capital of 110 km can take up to 5 hours
or even more during the rainy season.
It has been the desire of
the Community church of
Mozambique for many years to take the gospel and needed medical
care to the people of this district. The difficult traveling conditions have
meant that many areas have not been possible to reach regularly. The arrival
of the Mercy Air helicopter has changed all this. The two out-reach programms
that the helicopter has made so far, has enabled the team to do evangelism and
teaching in three or four locations in one day, that normally would have taken
a day or two for each visit.
In the small town of Santaca there is a small First Aid post staffed by a
health care worker who has had only two months training. On our first visit
there, she had run out of medication to treat patients with malaria. She was
very encouraged by the arrival of the doctor in our team. The team was also
able to help a severely disabled child with an improvised chair, to try and
stimulate her muscle tone. The health care worker also expressed to our team
the need for a church in that village and the importance of the biblical
teaching that was brought. In another village, there were several people
infected by the HIV virus who came to seek medical help.
It is for the opportunity to reach places like these, that we are extremely
grateful for the help and service of Mercy Air and look forward to these
services developing in the future!
Dr. Colin Pfaff.
