Update November 2004

Dear Friends and Supporters,

Life is full of joys and disappointments and this month we have had our share. Sometimes we feel that our very best is still not enough. We learn therefore to turn to our heavenly Father and accept His will in all that we do.

Foster Home Shunyi, Beijing

The babies:

We are grieved to announce that Shi Dong Sheng (from Xin Jiang province, with a congenital heart condition, severe malnutrition and Down’s syndrome) died on October 29th. We did all we could and it was hard to lose him. Rebekah (Fu Wen Yu, Extrophy of the bladder) had a 7 hour, difficult, but successful surgery in Sydney, Australia. Her immediate recovery was a little complicated too but she pulled through and is now recovering in Christina’s care in Sydney. We hope to have her home in about 4 weeks.
The good news is that all her female internal organs are intact and other than the inconvenience of a poorly controlled bladder she will be able to live a full and normal life. Her chances of adoption should be good. We are grateful to her surgeons, Drs. Grahame Smith and David Wood and all those who treated her with so much compassion at Westmead Children’s Hospital;  Teresa, our 4 month old who had surgery in Changchun has developed complications. The Chinese surgeons are unable to help so Dr J Lazareff, the UCLA surgeon who originally operated on her in Changchun is returning to Beijing to operate on her at Beijing United Family Hospital. This is an emergency situation as her brain fluid is leaking from her head wound in copious amounts and we would be grateful for your prayers for her. We are indeed grateful to Dr Lazareff , The Shepherd’s; Crook Ministries , Beijing United Family  Hospital, Johnson & Johnson, and all the individuals who have been instrumental  in getting the medical attention Teresa so desperately needs.

Jamie, another baby who had surgery in Changchun has developed an abscess behind his ear close to the shunt. Dr Lazareff will also see him next week. Dang Kang, the conjoined twin is unable to feed well so we are feeding him with a tube via a nose for the moment. He is very malnourished.

This month we took in 2 more babies, Fu Wen Jia (extra thumb) and Fu Wen Yu. ( deformity of both ears and deafness) They are both from Henan province. Kui Xin Dong (from Xinjiang) apparently did not have heart surgery in the local hospital as was planned for her. She is now with us and we are trying to get her to Singapore for surgery.  Other than the usual coughs, colds and asthma, the other children are well.

Due to government pressure on the orphanage in Ren Qiu, Jesher had to be returned there. This is unfortunate as he requires many more surgeries most likely out of the country. We will keep trying but it unlikely that he will be able to get a passport soon.

Including those in our outreach program, we are caring for 29 babies on a daily basis.

Volunteers.

Amanda M and Maria are volunteering with us at the moment.

Shunyi Outreach Foster Program.

This month we were able to move two more babies into the outreach program. Josie and Fu Xiao Xiong This brings the total in the program to 8.

Foster Home Sai Qi Fujian Province:

Guo Yan Fei, aged 7 years, one of the children originally from this Home but has been adopted by a local family, requires heart surgery and this is being sponsored by Harvard China Care. She will have surgery in Fuzhou hospital. Xu Xiao Bao, born with indeterminate sexual organs will probably have surgery in Singapore as soon as this can be arranged.

HFH Special Care Unit , Henan Province:

Renovation of the unit is complete and we are now in the process of equipping it. The distance from Beijing makes it hard for us to hurry this along but we hope to start taking babies in by mid December.

Our Needs:

Our Special Care Unit has 8 more rooms for sponsorship. We still need sponsorship of essential equipment. Our greatest need however, is a vehicle, to transport supplies and volunteers to the unit and surviving babies to Beijing for further treatment.  I know this is asking an awful lot but please let us know if anyone can help with these needs.

Our Thanks;

Our thanks to Peak Pacific who provided a computer for the special care unit. We continue to receive much needed medicines from various sources. Thank you all. Thanks to those who are sponsoring our new babies. Thanks too to all those good people in Sydney Australia who have helped and are still helping to care for Rebekah.

God’s special blessings on you all.

Robin and Joyce.
