Update January 2005
Dear Friends and Supporters,
A New Year begins. In the past 7 years, only by the grace of God, many little lives have been saved and forever changed; many have been healed physically and emotionally and ALL have been greatly loved. Each and every one is precious. Many wonderful parents who have adopted our children have given new lives to these kids. Many volunteers, supporters and friends have helped us greatly in our work. We look forward, with your continued support, to another year of being able to be of service to more kids-in-need. We are excited to see what 2005 will bring.
Our New Hope Foundation now has official status with the central Chinese government. We are registered with the China Association of Social Work. This apparently will not change the way we function and gives us a much more legal status here.
Foster Home Shunyi, Beijing
The babies:. Teresa Fu Xiao Juan is home with us after many months of problems, hospitalizations and surgeries. She has had a very rough ride but we are praying that her problems are now over and that she will continue to improve. Rebekah Fu Wen Yu is home from Australia after successful surgery on her bladder and pelvic bones. She is doing well. Joshua Fu Xiao Xin (Henan province) with congenital heart disease had successful surgery in Singapore. Aurora Kui Xin Dong (from Xin Jiang province) awaits funding approval for her surgery in Singapore. We are grateful to KK hospital for their service to our children.
Adoptions: Adam, Hayley and Cyndee are waiting for their parents to come and get them. Hayley’s Mom and Dad in the US call often and talk to her
New babies.: We now have 25 babies in -house.
We took in 5 new babies with heart problems from Datong, Shanxi province. Their conditions will be assessed and hopefully they will be candidates for surgery in Singapore. Baby Dang Da Nian (from Lang Fang) born with Imperforate Anus and a clubbed foot, had emergency surgery in the Beijing Children’s hospital. We will commence treatment on his clubbed foot now that his major problem is fixed. We briefly had the privilege of making Kai Zhong’s (a 1 month old baby for Taiyuan, Shanxi province) last few days on this earth comfortable and peaceful. His nanny, also from Taiyuan, impressed us so much when she wept for this sick, abandoned baby. After we disconnected him from all the supportive equipment we had him on, she held him in her arms till he drew his last breath then asked is she could bathe him and dress him in clean clothes and a little woolen hat. A very special lady who gave so much of her heart to a baby who was never going to be able to give her anything in return.
Volunteers.. Nurse Gemma R. (UK) is here for her 5th time. We rushed her off to Singapore with Joshua for surgery.
Shunyi Outreach Foster Program.
We now have 9 children in our Outreach program and they are doing well. Eloise was very ill with pneumonia and was admitted to Beijing United Family Hospital. She is now well and we are very grateful for the care she was given. Dang Guo Kun will have his cleft lip repaired by visiting US plastic surgeons in late April. Clubbed feet treatment continues for Dang Jian Hong and Eloise.
Foster Home Sai Qi Fujian Province:
Christina,( our nurse ) Ryan and Amber ( our 16 and 23 yr old kids) made a routine visit to this Foster Home on January 4th . Our 5 year old daughter accompanied them and she had a wonderful time playing with the children there. She said they were “cute”. We sent them funds, medicines and basic necessities. They now have 32 children but their physical home is deteriorating rapidly. The building is unsafe and an external wall on the stairwell has fallen away. Love Without Boundaries is working with us to fund the building of a new home for the children. Rob will work quickly as soon as Chinese New Year is over. Guo Yan Fei a 7 year old girl will have heart surgery in Fuzhou hospital sponsored by Harvard China Care. These young Harvard students are working hard to raise funds to help with the running costs of this Home. Between these two dedicated sponsors, we hope to make a huge difference in the lives of these children.
HFH Special Care Unit , Henan Province:
The unit officially began operation on January 1st his year. We started with 6 babies. One died, held in the arms of Julie, our volunteer, and one is in hospital for bowel surgery. We are grateful for the support of Beijing United Family Hospital for the supply of formula for the babies in this Unit. We had Sharon, Anh and Julie (all from the US) Dr L. Toquero from the UK and Sonya from Australia (who also cared for Rebekah in Australia for 2 months) volunteering at the Special Care Unit
Our Thanks;
We are especially grateful to the S. family in Beijing who put our need for a vehicle above their own. They needed a car themselves but sacrificed their savings to put towards ours. This is not the first time this family has gone to great lengths to help us care for our children. They are a very special family, not affluent but with hearts so big that surpasses our expectations. We are at a loss for words at their generosity.
We are so grateful to many for you who have sent us medicines that we asked for in last month’s newsletter. A very special thanks to Abbott laboratories in Singapore who donated 200 bottles of liquid vitamins.
We thank Nellcor who donated 2 Oximeters for the Special Care Unit.
Thanks to all those on our prayer list who have prayed for the children in need.
Our Needs:
1) Our greatest need today is for more volunteers to manage the Special care unit. Ideally we are looking for one or two who will stay for at least a month from March onwards. Someone with medical knowledge would be appreciated.
2) We are in need of soy milk formula which is difficult to find here. Any brand, any amounts will be truly approached.
3) We are in need of a washing machine and a dryer for our Special Care Unit.
4) We still are in need of more funds to be able to buy our vehicle to service the Special Care Unit.
May this New Year bring you all that your hearts’ desires.
Robin and Joyce.
