Dear Everyone who has been part of this surgical mission to Shanghai,
Here is a brief update.

All 8 children arrived in Shanghai without incident. The UCLA Surgeon arrived on schedule last night and he has started on his first patient this morning as I write.
Today he will operate on:
Fu Xiao Tian Girl, DOB 2005-3-2 Myelomeningocele, Hydrocephalus   ( HFH)
Gill Fu Dong Yu  Girl DOB: 2005-3-19 Myelomeningocele ( HFH)
Xi Xin Girl, 4 months old. Myelomeningocele ( Shepherd's Crook)

Tomorrow he will operate on:
Daisy Fu Chun Yi Girl DOB: 2005-4-17 Myelomeningocele (HFH)
David Dang Tong Sheng, Boy DOB: 1998- 7-1 Spina bifida ( Philip Hayden Foundation)
Dang Fang, Girl  ( China Care)

The day after he will operate on:
Fu Ya Chang, Boy DOB 2003-7-15  Hydrocephalus. Dandy Walker Syndrome. ( Philip Hayden Foundation)
Daniel Zhao Xiao Bing ( Shepherd's Crook)

Jake Fu Chun Chao, the 4th child from HFH, is critically ill and could not make the trip. He is in our Intensive Care Unit in our Beijing Home .To those on the prayer list, please continue to pray for Jake. The prognosis is not good. This is my 4th day of fasting and praying for him. We are keeping him pain free and comfortable.

I have been asked to go to Shanghai in the next few hours so I will not be answering emails for the next 2-3 days. I will update you all again on my return.
Thank you all so much for helping to make this possible for these children who were in great need.

With all God's blessings
Joyce

2nd UPDATE ON THE CHILDREN's SURGERY - 19.6.05

Dear Everyone.
Dr Nguyen from UCLA and the Shanghai United Hospital surgical team worked long into the night, sometimes till early hours of the morning to operate on the children.
7 surgeries have now been completed. Here is an update on each child.

Fu Xiao Tian Girl, DOB 2005-3-2 Myelomeningocele, Hydrocephalus   ( HFH)
Her spinal deformity was quite severe and surgery was long and difficult. She will need to be in  a body cast for about 6 weeks for her spine to heal.
She has a mild fever but she is doing well.

Gill Fu Dong Yu  Girl DOB: 2005-3-19 Myelomeningocele ( HFH)
Her surgery went well but she is spiking fevers and she is being investigated and treated accordingly

Xi Xin Girl, 4 months old. Myelomeningocele ( Shepherd's Crook)
Her surgery went well Her myelomeningocele was repaired and a shunt was put in to drain fluid from her brain. She is also spiking a fever and she isn't breathing well ( wheezing) . She is quite sick but under investigations and treatment.. Prayer team , please keep her especially in your prayers.

Daisy Fu Chun Yi Girl DOB: 2005-4-17 Myelomeningocele (HFH)
During surgery she was found to have infected brain fluid . Strangely she showed no signs of this before surgery and was feeding well and putting on weight. Her surgery went well and a special medicated shunt was put in and she is being treated with heavy antibiotics. She seems to be well in herself and has no fever and is feeding well.

David Dang Tong Sheng, Boy DOB: 1998- 7-1 Spina bifida ( Philip Hayden Foundation)
He was the last one to be operated on yesterday and he is still heavily sedated but the surgery went well.

Dang Fang, Girl  ( China Care)
Dang Fang could not receive surgery. Her trachea ( breathing tube ) is soft and anaesthesia was a high risk. The decision not to operate on her was a bitter disappointment to us all. This little baby has been taken to so many hospitals and so far none of us have been successful in getting surgery for her here in China. We are discussing other options and will keep trying till something can be done for her.

Fu Ya Chang, Boy DOB 2003-7-15  Hydrocephalus. Dandy Walker Syndrome. ( Philip Hayden Foundation)
His shunt was replaced and he is doing well.

Daniel Zhao Xiao Bing ( Shepherd's Crook)
He has had a permanent shunt put in and he is doing well too. He will come to HFH in Beijing after he is discharged

Jake Fu Chun Chao, the 4th child from HFH, is still alive but he is not in pain. Palliative care for him continues.

Thanks again for all your help.
Joyce
