Update February 2006

Dear Friends and Supporters,

Many opportunities are often presented to us for expansion of the work of HFH. We approach all of these with great caution and Godly advice from our board members. This year, God willing, HFH will open the Love Without Boundaries Special Care Unit in Beijing as well as the HFH Special Care Unit in Luoyang. We will soon be running a total of 5 projects.

1) Foster Home Shunyi, Beijing ( 26 beds)

The babies

Sadly we lost Fu Jin Wei on Feb 5th. He had Down’s syndrome, a congenital heart condition, was malnourished and died of a viral pneumonia. He was in no discomfort at the end and went peacefully.  Lily Fu Wen Hua’s burns continue to heal. It has been a team effort to care for Lily and we are very grateful for our volunteers, especially Sallie S. who chose to stay on longer to help care for her.  See also our “Thanks” section regarding special prayers for Lily. After a month with us, the worst is over and she will return to the Special Care unit in Jiaozuo , Henan province, this week for our volunteer nurses there to continue her care .

Lily                         Fu Jin Jin                Fu Yan                       Shan Tao                Fu Tian Yu

Fu Jin Jin was leaking brain fluid around her shunt and had to be admitted to a local hospital for surgery to replace the shunt.

Fu Yan will be returned to the orphanage as he is brain damaged but feeding well and does not need any surgical intervention. This will make room for another “waiting baby” who desperately needs surgery.

We were most excited to see Shan Tao (Evan) again. He was adopted by a Dutch family in August 2004 and his parents brought him back to China this month to visit us.

2) Love Without Boundaries Shunyi Outreach Foster Program. (currently 13 children with possible maximum of 20)
We have had to bring Fu Tian Yu (above) back from Foster care as his mom could no longer care for him. He will remain with us till adoption. .We would like to eventually be able to put 7 more children out in this program to ease our bed situation. We will see what happens.
3) HFH Special Care Unit, Jiaozuo, Henan Province: ( 12 beds)

Our beds here are full and we had to turn away 2 babies, but we have put them on our waiting list and will find beds as soon as we can.

Volunteers.

Sharon C.  and her Mom Janet were with us again and worked in this unit, giving Marta and Susanna a break for a couple of weeks. Nurse Kate RT arrived from Australia and will assist us for about a month.

4) LWB Special Care Unit ( 12 beds)

The bathroom fittings and other permanent fixtures have been ordered, and the flooring will go down. Bedding and cribs are ready and some new staff have been interviewed and selected, ready to be trained and start work. We have 17 babies on our waiting list but we will be able to take the 12 most urgent cases first and deal with the rest the best we can.  Our appeal for a physiotherapist to help us set up a program for this unit met with 12 enthusiastic applicants from 6 different countries. We have narrowed it down to 2 people whom we feel with be the best ones to start the program and are inviting the others to come when they can, throughout the year to ensure its continued success.  . In total we have 20 children who are currently in need of Physiotherapy.

5) HFH Special Care Unit, Luoyang, Henan Province: ( 45 beds)

We have a contractor to survey the unit and plan the renovations. The renovations will probably be started towards the middle of the year as right now we will not be able to single-handedly, cope with the daily medical needs of a total of 96 children without more help from long-term medical volunteers. This unit will be able to take in 45 critically ill infants from the Luoyang Orphanage who are in need of care. We hope to save many more lives. Our vision is still “To comfort always, to relieve often and to save sometimes”.

Our Most Sincere Thanks To;

1)       All those who responded so quickly to our request for burn cream for Lily. We also received very valuable advice from burn specialists in the US and HK as well as special burn dressings and gifts for her. A very special thanks to 4 year old Zara  and 3 year old Zena Dorris from Tennessee, who sent Lily a beautiful drawing and are praying for her recovery and for us, who are caring for her.  It’s very special to hear that 2 young children are praying ardently for another child they have never met, on the other side of the world.

2)     All our financial supporters who often go unnoticed (and often don’t want to be acknowledged). Please know that you are very much appreciated and your support has saved the lives of many, many unwanted babies.

3)     IAB students who did a Formula drive and delivered 3 huge boxes of Formula for our babies. This alone will feed all our babies for many months.

4)     Those who brought in much needed Soy Formula and other supplies not easily found in Beijing.

Our Needs:

1)       We need more long and short term, medically trained volunteers to offer their services to help with the management of our Special Care units.

2)     We need 2 foreign passport holders willing to take a child each and care for them in Hong Kong while they undergo surgery. All expenses paid.

OR…

2 families in Hong Kong who would be willing to foster a child each while they are there. One child is 3

years old and the other is currently 3 months old. Surgery is expected to take place in May 2006 and

the children are expected to be in Hong Kong for 8 weeks.

3)     Sponsorship of rooms are available if anyone would like to help with the Luoyang Special Care unit

              http://www.hopefosterhome.com/special_care/luoyang/index.htm

4)      We are in need of antibiotic eye drops and ointments.

5)      Fu Jin Jin requires about $2500 for hospital fees to replace her shunt. Last year many generous donors provided funds for a total of 19 children to have life-changing/life-saving surgeries. Because we focus on infants with this need, 99% of the children we take in, undergo surgery.

 With gratitude
