Carol and Richard Drury have been selected as CMS Mission Partners to work in Northern Uganda at Bishop Allison Theological College. which serves the Sudanese people. “We are both excited about the challenges ahead” they say.
They met at Birmingham Bible Institute 2O years ago Richard was studying towards a three-year diploma and BD degree. Carol had just completed her registration in genera! nursing, after specializing in orthopedics, and was taking a year out to invest in theological study. One of the first questions Richard asked her was “How do you feel about working in Uganda?” Carol gave him short shrift!
They married in I 985 and Carol went back to nursing to support Richard through teacher training. They then went to live in Carol’s home city of Bristol, and Richard made a career move to insurance, and the church setting became his outlet for his urge to teach. Carol remained in nursing for a while before branching out into information technology within the health service. She implemented different health systems, moved towards project management, information management and then became assistant general manager at a major teaching hospital in Bristol. Both had a variety of leadership roles in their local church.
Carol and Richard were both independently called to the Anglican ministry; Richard in 1996 whilst he was doing a part-time MA at Trinity College. A year later Carol was about to be promoted but turned down the opportunity to answer her call.
They served curacies in separate but adjoining parishes. Richard worked to keep mission high on the agenda. and was involved with the Uganda Link for Bristol Diocese. Carol became involved in the pastoral support of international student’s spouses at Trinity College. Through this contact, and a CMS lent course on Sudanese Christianity, she began to feel that she should explore the idea of working overseas with Richard. and they approached CMS.
Richard enjoys reading (mainly theology) and any kind of sport, both watching and participating. Carol’s favourite pastimes include photography, playing the piano and guitar, and watercolor painting. They trained for two terms at Crowther Hall, the CMS College in Birmingham, and left for Uganda in summer 2004
